The Dumont Huskies staged a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter, securing a 20-14 victory over the Teaneck Highwaymen at Teaneck High School in New Jersey.
In the first quarter, Dumont's special teams made an immediate impact when Eric Orso recovered a fumble at the Teaneck 20-yard line. Facing a third down and 13 at that spot, quarterback Michael Gil lofted a pass to running back Onyx Trinidad in the flat. Trinidad shook off a defensive player and rumbled down the left side of the field into the end zone for a touchdown. However, the extra point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 6-0 in favor of Dumont.
In the second quarter, Teaneck took advantage of excellent field position, starting their drive at their own 40-yard line following a punt. The Highwaymen's offense advanced into Huskies territory but faced a third down and 10 at the 40.
Quarterback Rhys Lugo dropped back in the pocket and fired a pass to wide receiver Demetrius Owens. Owens spun around and outran the Dumont defense into the end zone for a spectacular touchdown, putting Teaneck ahead 7-6 with five minutes remaining in the half.
Teaneck's defense then forced the Huskies' offense into a quick three-and-out, resulting in a punt. The Highwaymen executed a potent mix of run and pass plays, moving the ball deep into Huskie’s territory. Teaneck successfully converted a crucial fourth down, keeping their drive alive. With time winding down in the first half, Lugo rolled out to his right and tossed a 5-yard pass to a wide-open Jayden Castro, extending Teaneck's lead to 14-6 at halftime.
The third quarter was marred by severe rain, leading to a scoreless period.
With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Huskies' offense put together a significant drive, advancing into Teaneck's territory. Onyx Trinidad capped off this drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, trimming the deficit to 14-12 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.
Just when it seemed the Highwaymen would hold on for the win, the Dumont offense regained possession with a couple of minutes remaining and quickly advanced into Teaneck's end of the field. With 22 seconds left on the clock, Gil dropped back under heavy pressure and launched a pass down the middle. Eric Orso made a spectacular diving catch, crashing into a teammate in the end zone.
The Huskies opted for a two-point conversion. Gil took the snap, twirled around, and, just before being pushed out of bounds, delivered a pass to wide receiver Logan LeRose in the back of the end zone, making the score 20-14 in favor of Dumont.
The Huskies' defense held firm against Teaneck's final efforts to score in the closing seconds, leading to a jubilant celebration once the final whistle blew.
